I have the newer magicjack plus but haven't even opened the package yet. Maybe I shouldn't. Another like Skype is Nimbuzz.I have both installed on phone and laptop. Was going to hook up the magicjack to my shop router but will look into other services now.

    Default Ooma

I use Ooma and it is great. It uses about 1 megabyte per minute. Voice quality is very good. Of course there is latency, not really a problem.

I have noticed that VOIP will work on slowed speed as long as no one else is online. I used Eon on my phone while I was turned off for a couple of weeks, it worked great except about 5 seconds of garbage on a 10 minute call. Google voice did fine though (on the PC via Chrome) so the garbage could have been with Eon or the WIFI on my Xperia Play. The delay is a little more noticeable on slowed speed but it is no worse then a bad cell connection which people around here are used to.

How much data does Vonage us?. We are on the phone no longer than 10 hrs a week. We could use our cell phones for emergency and VOIP for calls. Our Verizon home phone sucks. Every time it rains our lines ruin and they have to fix it. You'd figure it would be against the law for phone companies to have bad lines. Especially when we pay $60 a month.

Verizon still has land lines? Wow. They sold out their territory here in Northern New England to Fairpont a few years back. Fairpoint isn't great, but V had been skimping on maintenance and service for quite a while to concentrate on wilreless. After the problems I had for so many years with them, I will never use their wireless either.
