Knowledge is finite...there is a limit to change...once the "mother scientific load" has been mined, that's all folks.

Yes, fields like medicine will see more/more understandings, along with better treatments...but this future change can be predicted now.

DVD/Blu-Ray becoming history...as in better tech, or better ways to screw the consumer?

I think s/he meant, as in online streaming/downloads taking preference. It's so much easier to grab something off of the internet, you can have nearly unlimited choices (of course in illegal ways, but also you can almost always store more on servers than you could in a store, warehouse, or RedBox booth), and you can have it instantaneously. Quality is skyrocketing, we can watch movies that take advantage of shiny HD TVs just over streaming. Downloads, too -- HD versions of TV episodes are frequenting many legal outlets. And in terms of grey area...if I can get a .mp4 of a file taken from a high quality airing of an episode, I can have a 150 MB file that LOOKS much better than a DVD.

While hard copies will always be there for you even during the worst internet outage, I can imagine a world in the next 20 years where they don't mean a whole lot for anyone with a nice connection and no/high download limits. The only thing standing in the way would be the studios, etc. who might miss the high profit margins they get on a cheap-to-produce DVD/Blu-Ray. But they can always charge you plenty online, too.

ETA: I may have misread you, sorry if I babbled unnecessarily.

Problem is, Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), ranks 34 member countries. U.S. ranks 15th with only 27.3% penetration with high speed internet.

And even then, if all 27.3% got online at same time to watch the same Netflix movie, I'd venture to say the whole system would come to a halt.

Thanks Phainein for the link and heads up about HTML5. I am going to try it out. I am downloading the NetWorx product right now!

I'm not convinced a typical user needs to know "how it works" to be a happy customer. Can you completely explain , in detail, the combustion process for gasoline and diesel engines? The complete theory of how the microwave works? The lifecycle of jolly green giant vegetables? The "secret" to McDonald's secret sauce?

CS and technical support should be able to resolve issues, in a timely manner. An on-site technician should have to show up when scheduled while being technically and mechanically competent. Any business that employs subcontractors in any capacity should be able to correct deficiencies in the sub's work without making the customer wait for the sub to give permission.

While you don't have to know all the details of how satellite internet works, you should know the basics. This includes the fact your signal will be sent up to space and back down through a gateway. Because of the distance the signal takes to travel, it will create high latency...which in turn impacts some internet usage such as online gaming and VOIP. Weather is another factor that can hinder satellite internet. This can be weather at your house or at the gateway. Finally, monitor your internet usage meter very closely. Some internet applications can eat data rapidly, and 7.5GB of data doesn't go very far in this day and age unless you are very careful about your usage.

IMHO, those are some basics a satellite internet user should know to better understand how their system performance can be impacted.

I still tend to disagree. If on a T1, DSL, cable access, fiber, etc., the typical end user knows very little about the transmit/receive function. Most probably don't know which browser they use. Typical consumerism though. Survey the same people and ask them where their water or elec. comes from. Maybe the providers should be required to show some of these issues in their advertisements or to make public "recall" notices.

Unfortunately, that is true with many things in this country. People just don't take their time to do their homework and understand the pros and cons of any purchases or decisions.

Time and/or "intelligence," there's the rub. It requires time to examine any product, along with intelligence to sort it out.

Several years ago, I needed a window AC unit...I only read the box printing at one large store...5 year warranty, energy star, major known brand with turn back on feature after power failure is the one I bought. Hence, I ain't going to waste my time reading thru consumer reports when the box shows items of interest to me.

In other words, in some matters, one should take the time to research, and in others, it really don't make a hoot if one looks for key words printed on the box.
