You might also enjoy MenuMeters. It is only a 883 KB download from here.

Activate the network tab to see real time internet activity.

You may also check it out at the Developer's Site.

Thanks for that link. I've been using Surplus Meter for a couple of years, but I downloaded Menu Meter and I like it.

The thing to keep in mind with these computer resident utilities is that ALL traffic between the computer and the LAN is counted; if one is running Time Machine, Time Capsule or share with other in-house machines, that traffic is also counted.

True, but it gives me a very good ballpark figure on my usage. All that is on my network is my MacBook, my wife's Dell, and a wireless printer. Between the WB counter and mine, I'm able to keep track pretty well.

    Never used it

Low Quality Flash - Sets Flash objects to "Low Quality" to improve performance on slower platforms (i.e. older computers, netbooks, and Firefox Mobile).

This add-on uses JavaScript to alter OBJECT and EMBED tags on a page setting Adobe Flash objects to "Low Quality." This can vastly improve performance on lower-powered platforms like older computers, cheap netbooks, and cellphones using Firefox Mobile. (It also helps if there's a site you love to read that just so happens to load 20 flash advertisements next to the article text.)

This is not supported or endorsed by Adobe in any way. The add-on does not interact directly with Adobe Flash (only with the HTML on the page).

This looks like a cool utility. I run an airport extreme...I assume I have to load this on each of my computers to get an accurate reading or is something sitting on the router itself?

It has to run on each computer on the network. Also be aware that it records all traffic. If you share data between the two Macs, that is also added to both computers, on one as transmit and the other as received.

There are router firmware packages available to measure WAN traffic but not for any of the Apple products.

this is weird...I've download it and the agent is running. However, it is not showing any activity in over an hour. Any help on what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks for that info. I just downloaded SurplusMeter, but have some questions. Does it monitor the traffic on just one computer or can it actually see what is coming through the modem? I have a home network and would like to keep track of my limit by including all usage.

I noticed that there are several options to choose from the drop down menu; which would be best? It defaulted to PPP modem, but I could choose from Ethernet port, Airport, Network card. or Adaptor. Seems like Ethernet port would just monitor this computer, and my Airport is actually taking its IP assignment from my Linksys EA 2700, which is directly connect to the Exede modem. Is PPP Modem the one I want to use?

The computer with Surplusmeter is wired to my 2700 with a reserved address (one of my attempts to resolve the communication issue), so I'm wondering if the meter would properly measure traffic.

    Any help would be appreciated.

It monitors trafic on the computer it runs on. You have to install it on all computers.
It also monitors all traffic; that is, if you share files between computers on your local network, that traffic is also recoded.

For wireless connected computers choose Airport.
For computers connected via ethernet choose Ethernet.

    Hope this helps.
