Keep in mind there are dedicated servers in Exede's system. Exede's Gateways are only passing user traffic; there are no internet access requests being executed here.
Their server "farms" can be upgraded, along with higher throughput when needed.
Wildblue Legacy Gateway system is a different "animal." DAMA was most likely a tool to insure all page elements could be sent at once.
I have Excede 12. Uploads are 12-15 Mbps and Downloads are 1.5-2 Mbps. Speeds are great for VOIP but, yes latency can drive you a little nuts. There is a noticeable delay in your voice getting to the other caller. Here is the big issue. I learned a new term called Jitter. This is the ability for the transmission to be sustained over a period of time. Jitter is between 65ns and 700ns on my system. Anything over 5 ns is not really suitable for VOIP. I have 8x8 service for 30 days so far. Most of the calls I get go to voicemail because it is showing service is down. The soft phone software will not even log in. 8x8 customer service is pretty good and said my phone losses connection 40-50 times a day and to give up. The jitter is just too bad. Shame because the voice quality on the polycom phone I have is awesome. 8x8 has a 30 day cancellation policy. I read about a Jitter Buffer but, the phone I have has a built in buffer that is not adjustable. The other thing is that I jumped from 7 GIG/month use to 38 GIG/month use and I get about 60 min of use a day out of the phone. YES 38 GB!!!! So this does NOT work once they start the meter in Sept! Worth the test. In the meantime I have blocked the IP address at night through my router so it won't connect and I can keep usage down a little. If Exede can fix the jitter they will have a home run. Maybe there is hope in the testing period over the summer.
I also tried Magic Jack. It is much more simple and connectivity was not an issue but, the the latency caused a delay of almost .5 seconds and I got a bad connection now and then. Weather affects ability to call out as well. I had no service during heavy rain. Can beet $30/year but, if you are a home business, the voicemail and called ID says Magic Jack which was a little unprofessional.
It's been suggested Exede will have VOIP...for a few extra bucks...never heard any more on this topic.
Here's a test from LA to Phoenix to LA

M2cosey, and everyone,
We've successfully trialed Skype video chat calls over Exede systems at several public demos (CES in Las Vegas, and dealer conventions in Atlanta & Orlando). It works very well.
We've also trialed VOIP calls successfully several times. One demo of VOIP that you can see was at our CES booth. Fast forward to the 5:45 mark of this video (courtesy of Engadget).

Please note I have changed usernames to "Exede Steve", and do not use this account anymore. Thank you.
You might want to try an OBI100. The device is about 40.00-50.00 depending on where you buy it. It can be set up to work with Google Voice which is free and works just like anyother VoIP service. If you don't like it, you are only out the price of the box.
Thanks Steve, I saw video. Same phone I have but, using 8x8 VOIP service in my case. Calls work fine going out. Coming in is hit or miss. The phone looses connection 40-50 times a day with jitter being the only poor number I have. Can't find a solution for it but, would love to experiment if any ideas. I think the high bandwidth usage is due to the connecting and reconnecting because experiments show that the bandwidth usage is essentially the same regardless of how much I use the phone.
Interested in seeing what VOIP might be offered as mentioned in the video particularly for small business uses. I would subscribe.
I just tried out MAGIC JACK with my new upgraded Exede and it worked fine...Then after a couple of days I noticed that my data usage went wild...
I burned up 10-11GB in 2 days and I do not ever stream, download big files, movies etc. I had only received 4-5 phone calls over that period of time. I started closely monitoring usage to find that approx. 100mb was being used every 20-30 mins even when there was no phone activity.. Needless to say I disconnected Magic jack...
First time poster here! Has anyone used the Nettalk duo? I've ordered one and it's supposed to be here tomorrow and I'm excited to see how it preforms.
